Homemade Baby Food

I love eating big boy food!  Don't you love the mess it makes?

While I am not one to make my family eat all organic, gluten free or non processed food, I do try to sneak healthy choices as often as possible.  One thing that has always bothered me is canned baby food. It ranks right there with canned peas in my mind.  But I fed it to both of my girls.

With Josiah I have the time, and so I decided to try and find a quick way to make my own baby food.  I did not want to pay for an appliance that just made baby food because they eat baby food for such a short period of time.  Then I remembered my hand immersion blender.  I decided to give it a try was impressed with the results.  My favorite part about this method?  It is very fast!

First I steamed my peas.  Then I added them, with some water, to the cup that came with the blender.

Then I started blending away, adding more water if it didn't look thin enough.  I blended for about two minutes.

Finally I poured it into these great containers that I found.

This is a comparison of my homemade and store bought pea baby food, which says it contains the same two ingredients.  Homemade baby food can also be frozen in ice cube trays and then put into freezer bags.  I did this with applesauce and pearsauce last fall, and I just pull out a couple at a time and thaw what I need for a day or two.

So far I have tried this with peas, spinach, beans, and carrots and it has worked well for all four veggies.  And the most important part is Josiah seems to approve!

Have you tried making your own baby food?  If you have any tips or secrets please share!

Have a wonderful Monday night!

  1. Becky, my kids would not eat baby food from a jar. AT ALL. I did exactly what you are doing only I used a handi-chopper (Walmart, VERY cheap) and I started to freeze the stuff, but quickly moved on the just grinding up what ever we were having to eat that day. Your kids are ADORABLE by the way!!

  2. Looks like he loves his peas! I too bought baby food for my first but this around decided to play around with the $30 food processor my husband bought me (he knows me too well). My 8 month old will eat pretty much anything I make for her. I make a big batch of one thing every few days and freeze them in ice cube trays, and each food goes into a large freezer bag; then just take out whatever I need for the day. Lately I make extra of whatever we are eating for dinner, throw it in the processor, and freeze so she has different entrees along with the regular staples. It is a lot of fun making new combos, isn't it!? I have a feeling she won't be as picky an eater as her older sister either. Have fun!
