{make your own} cake bunting

There has been a lot of excitement in my family the last year.  My brother got married.  My sister got engaged.  Now we are preparing for my brothers first baby and my sisters wedding!  {I am so excited at the thought of another squishy baby to hold.}

In July we had a baby shower for my sister-in-law.  I decided we needed to have a mini bunting for a cake topper.  However, I really couldn't find a tutorial, so my attempt was less than perfect.  But it got the job done.

gather supplies
First I selected felt in my color scheme.  {I'm guessing scrapbook paper would also work well!}
Scissors, bakers twine, candy sticks, and a ruler or a small triangle template.

attach the twine
I tied the bakers twine onto the top of two candy sticks.  I wanted the sticks to be about 7 inches apart so it would go at least half the distance of my 8 inch round cake, with enough excess to sag.  Apply a tiny amount of hot glue to secure the bows in place.

cut the triangles
Next I cut the triangles.  I made them equilateral, however I think next time I will make the top of the triangle shorter than the two sides.  Each side was about 3/4 of an inch.  I had a total of 5 triangles going across the bunting, however each finished triangle requires two cut outs, so I ended up cutting a total of 10 triangles.

attach the triangles
To attach the triangles I laid a triangle down and put the twine across the top of the triangle.  Then I applied a smidgen of hot glue on the twine and pressed the other triangle on top of the glue.  This creates a sandwich of two triangles with a piece of twine glued in the middle.

I would suggest laying out all of your triangles first to make sure you are spacing them in a way that is pleasing to you.

I made the tassel garland using this tutorial.
Not too hard, just time consuming cutting all of the tissue paper.  {And yes, I obviously cut or twisted something wrong on that middle tassel.}

And that's it!  I need to practice making some more mini buntings.  You can swap out these materials for anything that is pleasing to your eye.  Just make sure the bunting isn't too heavy for your twine and makes it twist or flip.

Happy partying.  :)
