diy bench cushion {no sewing required!}

I am finally at the last phase of my garage entrance!  {It has only taken about 6 months.}  I wanted cushions for the two benches, but ordering custom cushions can be very expensive.  So I decided to create my own.  It was cheaper than ordering the finished product, but keep in mind that foam is not cheap.

I had a quarter inch piece of plywood cut to size.  Then I cut a piece of foam to the same size.

Add some wood glue and put the foam on top.  I ended up cutting a second piece of foam and placing it on top to add extra cushion.  I didn't use any glue, just laid it on top.

Next I cut a piece of batting that gave me at least 3 inches extra on all sides.

I pulled it taut and secured with a couple staples from my staple gun.

I repeated the same process with my fabric, making sure that it was pulled tight and smooth.  I folded the corners like the corner of a present.

Secure with enough staples to make sure that the fabric will lay flat.  Because this cushion is going into an area of my home that is always dirty I chose outdoor fabric.  I love the pattern and the material feels durable.

Kailey had to inspect the final product to make sure that the cushion was soft enough!  I will be posting a reveal of the entire space in the next day or two, so make sure you check back.

Enjoy your beautiful Thursday,

Becky

  1. How would you go about attaching the cushion to a bench so it doesnt move?

    1. Using the wood glue helps to secure the cushion. Then if your material is pulled as tightly as possible when stapled to the board there will be no wiggle room for the cushion.

    3. Maybe next time I should do a better job reading the question. :) I was fortunate enough that mine seems to stay in place, and I like having mine unattached. It is easier to clean. I would think you could try a couple of different options. You could try attaching some of those grip strips that are used for the bottom of a rug if you want yours to stay in place without securing it permanently.

  2. I attached a few Velcro strips to keep mine in place, and they worked perfectly
